Evidence supporting the use of: Rhubarb (unspecified)
For the health condition: Menstrual Irregularity
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Rhubarb (Rheum spp.) has a long history of use in traditional medicine, especially in Chinese and other Asian herbal systems. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), rhubarb is primarily valued as a purgative and for its effects on the digestive system and as a blood-moving herb. Some TCM formulations that include rhubarb are used to address menstrual irregularities, particularly those believed to be caused by blood stasis or constipation affecting menstrual flow. However, the inclusion of rhubarb in such formulas is usually alongside many other herbs, and its specific role is not always well-defined.
There is very limited scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of rhubarb for treating menstrual irregularity. Most modern research on rhubarb focuses on its laxative properties, anti-inflammatory effects, and potential roles in gastrointestinal and metabolic disorders, rather than on gynecological or reproductive health. Few, if any, clinical trials have rigorously evaluated rhubarb alone for menstrual irregularities in humans. As such, while there is traditional precedent for its use in this context, robust scientific validation is lacking, and the existing evidence is largely anecdotal or based on traditional formulations rather than isolated use.
