Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Pubescent Angelica (Angelica pubescens), also known as "Du Huo" in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), is primarily used in traditional contexts for various ailments, including musculoskeletal pain, rheumatism, and sometimes for women's health issues. The use of Angelica species for menstrual irregularity is largely based on traditional practices rather than robust scientific evidence. In TCM, Angelica sinensis ("Dong Quai") is more commonly associated with gynecological conditions, including menstrual irregularity, but Angelica pubescens is sometimes included in composite formulas intended to support menstrual health. The theoretical basis in TCM attributes these effects to its abilities to "dispel wind and dampness" and promote "blood circulation," which are believed to be beneficial for menstrual regulation. However, scientific studies specifically examining the efficacy of Pubescent Angelica for menstrual irregularity are lacking. There are a few animal studies and in vitro reports suggesting possible effects on smooth muscle or circulation, but these do not constitute direct evidence for use in menstrual disorders. Therefore, its use for this condition remains rooted in traditional herbalism with limited scientific validation.
