Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Pennyroyal (Mentha pulegium) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in Europe and North America, for the management of menstrual irregularities and as an emmenagogue (a substance believed to stimulate menstrual flow). Historical texts and folk medicine sources often mention pennyroyal tea or extracts as remedies for delayed or suppressed menstruation, and it was sometimes used by midwives to encourage the onset of menses. However, there is a lack of robust scientific studies or clinical trials validating these effects in humans. Most of the available evidence is anecdotal or based on traditional use rather than modern scientific research. Additionally, pennyroyal contains compounds such as pulegone, which are known to be toxic to the liver and can cause severe adverse effects, including organ failure and death, especially at higher doses. Because of these significant safety concerns, pennyroyal is not recommended for self-treatment of menstrual irregularities, and its historical use should not be interpreted as evidence of safety or efficacy.
