Lovage (Levisticum officinale) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in European and Middle Eastern cultures. Traditionally, lovage root and leaves have been used for a variety of women's health concerns, including menstrual irregularity and menstrual pain (dysmenorrhea). Herbalists historically believed lovage to have emmenagogue properties, meaning it could stimulate menstrual flow and help regulate cycles thought to be delayed or suppressed. This belief is largely rooted in traditional European herbal texts and folk medicine, where lovage was often included in remedies for "female complaints." The rationale was based on the plant's warming and stimulating effects, as well as its observed diuretic and mild antispasmodic actions, which were thought to help with uterine function and alleviate menstrual discomfort.

However, scientific evidence supporting lovage’s efficacy for menstrual irregularity is limited. There are few, if any, rigorous clinical trials or pharmacological studies directly investigating lovage for this specific indication. Most available data are anecdotal or extrapolated from its general effects on smooth muscle and inflammation. Therefore, while the use of lovage for menstrual irregularity is justified by tradition, it lacks strong scientific validation at this time. Women interested in using lovage for menstrual issues should consult a healthcare provider, especially because its safety profile during pregnancy and in menstrual disorders has not been well established.
