Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG) is used in the management of certain types of menstrual irregularity, particularly those related to ovulatory dysfunction. hCG is a hormone produced during pregnancy, but pharmacologically, it mimics the action of luteinizing hormone (LH), which is crucial for triggering ovulation in women. In clinical practice, hCG is often used as part of ovulation induction protocols, especially in women with anovulation or oligo-ovulation (infrequent ovulation), such as those with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

There is scientific validation for the use of hCG in these settings. By administering hCG at the appropriate time in a woman's cycle, clinicians can induce the final maturation and release of the egg from the ovarian follicle, thereby supporting the restoration of a more regular menstrual cycle in women with certain types of menstrual irregularity. This approach is particularly established in assisted reproductive technologies (ART) and fertility treatments, where hCG is routinely used to trigger ovulation.

However, the use of hCG is not appropriate for all causes of menstrual irregularity; it is specifically effective for cases where the irregularity is due to failure of ovulation rather than other causes (such as structural abnormalities, thyroid disorders, or hyperprolactinemia). The overall quality of evidence is moderate—there are numerous clinical trials and decades of clinical use, but its application is specific and should be guided by careful diagnosis. Thus, hCG is a scientifically validated treatment for certain menstrual irregularities, but not a general remedy for all irregular menstrual patterns.
