Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Chinese Chive (Allium tuberosum), known as "jiu cai" in Chinese, has a longstanding place in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It is traditionally used to invigorate yang, warm the kidneys, and promote circulation. In TCM texts, menstrual irregularity is sometimes attributed to deficiencies or imbalances in kidney yang or qi. Chinese Chive seeds, in particular, are believed to help with reproductive and menstrual disorders, including irregular menstruation, due to their warming properties and supposed ability to regulate the flow of qi and blood.

However, there is little to no modern scientific research directly validating the use of Chinese Chive for treating menstrual irregularity. The use is based on traditional doctrine rather than controlled clinical trials or pharmacological studies. Some studies have explored the general nutritional and antimicrobial properties of Chinese Chive, but not specifically its effects on the menstrual cycle. Thus, while there is a solid basis in traditional herbal practice for this use, the evidence by modern scientific standards is weak.
