Evidence supporting the use of: Cane Molasses
For the health condition: Menstrual Irregularity
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Cane molasses has traditionally been used in various cultures as a home remedy to support menstrual health and treat menstrual irregularities. The basis for its use lies primarily in its nutrient content, particularly iron, calcium, magnesium, and vitamin B6. These nutrients are important for overall health and may play a role in reducing menstrual discomfort or supporting regular cycles, especially in cases where deficiencies contribute to symptoms. In folk medicine, particularly in Caribbean, South Asian, and some African traditions, blackstrap molasses (a type of cane molasses) is recommended to women for menstrual issues such as cramps, irregular periods, or heavy bleeding.
However, there is very limited scientific research or clinical trial data directly supporting the use of cane molasses for treating menstrual irregularity. The traditional use is largely anecdotal, and most evidence is based on the known benefits of its constituent nutrients rather than on studies of molasses itself. Therefore, while it may be a useful dietary supplement for some women, especially those at risk of iron deficiency, it should not be considered a proven treatment for menstrual irregularities. Further research would be needed to scientifically validate these traditional claims.
