Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

California Peony (Paeonia californica) has traditionally been used by some Native American groups and herbal practitioners for female reproductive health, particularly to support or regulate menstrual cycles. Historical records indicate that roots of various peony species were employed in folk medicine as remedies for menstrual irregularity, cramps, and related complaints. However, most of these uses are based on tradition and are more extensively documented for other peony species, such as Paeonia lactiflora (Chinese peony), which is a well-established herb in Traditional Chinese Medicine for gynecological conditions. There is very limited direct evidence specific to California Peony (Paeonia californica), and almost no modern clinical trials examine its efficacy or safety for menstrual irregularity. The scant scientific literature mostly addresses the phytochemistry of the plant rather than clinical outcomes. Therefore, while the use of California Peony for menstrual irregularity is grounded in traditional herbal practice, there is insufficient scientific validation or clinical research to robustly support its effectiveness for this indication.
