Saraca asoca (commonly known as Asoka) has a long history of use in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for the treatment of various gynecological disorders, particularly menstrual irregularities such as menorrhagia (excessive bleeding), dysmenorrhea (painful periods), and amenorrhea (absence of periods). In Ayurveda, the bark of the Asoka tree is a key ingredient in several classical formulations like Ashokarishta, which is prescribed to support female reproductive health and regulate the menstrual cycle.

The traditional rationale is based on the belief that Asoka bark possesses "uterine tonic" properties, helping to balance the female hormones and improve uterine function. It is also considered to have astringent and anti-inflammatory properties, which are thought to help control excessive menstrual bleeding and alleviate discomfort.

Scientific studies on Asoka are limited and mostly preliminary. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest possible estrogenic and anti-inflammatory effects, but robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. Therefore, while the traditional use is well documented and widely practiced in South Asian countries, high-quality scientific evidence validating its efficacy and safety for menstrual irregularities is insufficient at present. Overall, its continued use is primarily justified by tradition rather than strong scientific validation.
