Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) has been traditionally used to support women during menopause, primarily for symptoms such as mood swings, irritability, and fatigue. The rationale comes from its role in neurotransmitter synthesis, particularly serotonin and dopamine, which regulate mood and emotional well-being. However, scientific evidence supporting its effectiveness for menopause-related symptoms is very limited. A few small studies from the 1970s and 1980s suggested that B6 supplementation might help alleviate depressive symptoms in perimenopausal women, but these studies were generally low in quality and had methodological issues. More recent reviews and clinical guidelines do not support the use of Vitamin B6 as a primary intervention for menopause symptoms, citing insufficient and inconsistent evidence. Most reputable organizations, such as the North American Menopause Society, do not recommend Vitamin B6 specifically for menopause management. In summary, while its use is rooted in tradition and theoretical mechanisms, the scientific validation for Vitamin B6’s role in managing menopause symptoms is weak and not well established.
