Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) has traditionally been used as a supplement to help manage certain symptoms of menopause, particularly mood-related symptoms such as irritability, depression, and anxiety. This traditional use is based on vitamin B6's role as a cofactor in the synthesis of neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine, which are important in mood regulation. In the mid-20th century, some clinicians began recommending B6 for premenstrual syndrome (PMS), and by extension, it was sometimes used for menopausal symptoms, especially when women experienced similar mood disturbances as those seen in PMS.
However, scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of vitamin B6 for menopause is limited and generally weak. A few small studies have explored B6 in the context of PMS and mood disorders, but robust clinical trials specifically investigating B6 for menopausal symptoms are lacking. The available studies often suffer from methodological weaknesses, such as small sample sizes or lack of placebo controls. Systematic reviews and guidelines do not currently recommend vitamin B6 as a primary treatment for menopause-related symptoms.
