Rhaponticin is a natural compound found primarily in Rheum rhaponticum (rhubarb) extract, which has been used in standardized form (notably as ERr 731) for the treatment of menopausal symptoms, especially hot flashes. Scientific studies, including several randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials, have shown that extracts standardized for rhaponticin and related stilbenes can reduce the frequency and severity of vasomotor symptoms in postmenopausal women. These effects are thought to be mediated by selective modulation of estrogen receptor beta (ERβ) rather than alpha (ERα), suggesting a more favorable safety profile compared to conventional hormone replacement therapy. Notably, trials published in peer-reviewed journals (e.g., Menopause, 2006; Maturitas, 2013) demonstrate statistically significant improvement in menopause-related symptoms, with a good safety record over up to two years of use. However, most clinical evidence is for the whole extract, not isolated rhaponticin, and studies are limited in size and duration. Therefore, while there is credible scientific evidence supporting the use of rhaponticin-containing extracts for menopausal symptoms—particularly hot flashes—the evidence base is not as robust as that for established therapies, and more long-term, large-scale studies are needed to confirm efficacy and safety.
