Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Rehmannia (Rehmannia glutinosa) is a traditional herb widely used in Chinese medicine, particularly in formulas aimed at addressing symptoms related to menopause, such as hot flashes, night sweats, and fatigue. Its use for menopause is rooted primarily in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), where Rehmannia is considered to nourish yin and replenish body fluids, which are believed to be depleted during menopause. Classic formulas such as "Liu Wei Di Huang Wan" and "Zhi Bai Di Huang Wan" include Rehmannia as a key ingredient for balancing hormones and supporting the kidneys—organs thought to be closely linked with menopausal symptoms in TCM theory. Despite its long history of traditional use, scientific evidence supporting Rehmannia's effectiveness for menopausal symptoms is limited. A few animal studies and small-scale clinical trials have suggested potential benefits in modulating hormones or reducing some menopausal complaints, but these findings are preliminary and not robust enough to draw firm conclusions. There is a lack of large, high-quality randomized controlled trials directly validating Rehmannia’s efficacy for menopause in humans. Therefore, while it remains a staple in traditional herbal formulas, its use is justified by tradition rather than strong scientific validation.
