Evidence supporting the use of: Raspberry (various)
For the health condition: Menopause
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Raspberry (including red raspberry leaf and fruit) has a history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in relation to women's reproductive health. Traditional herbalists have used raspberry leaf for centuries to support menstrual health, ease labor, and, less commonly, to help with menopausal symptoms. The rationale is that raspberry leaf contains phytoestrogens and other plant compounds thought to have mild hormone-modulating effects. However, scientific validation for these traditional uses is lacking. Few clinical studies have investigated raspberry leaf or fruit specifically for menopause-related symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, or mood changes. Most supporting evidence is anecdotal or based on historical herbal texts rather than controlled research. Modern herbal guides may still mention raspberry for general female reproductive health, but its use for menopause is not well-supported by current research. Overall, while raspberry’s use for menopause is grounded in tradition, its effectiveness for this indication remains unproven by scientific studies, and evidence quality is very low.
