Evidence supporting the use of: Provence Rose
For the health condition: Menopause
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Provence Rose (Rosa × centifolia), also known as the cabbage rose, has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, especially in Europe and parts of the Middle East. Its petals and essential oil have been used for their purported calming, mood-lifting, and mildly estrogenic effects, which are sometimes invoked in the context of menopausal symptom relief—particularly for mood swings, insomnia, and hot flashes. However, the historical use is largely based on anecdotal accounts and traditional herbal texts, rather than rigorous clinical trials.
There is minimal scientific evidence to support the use of Provence Rose specifically for menopause. Some very limited studies on rose oil (not always specifically from Provence Rose) have investigated its use in aromatherapy for reducing anxiety and improving mood, which may indirectly benefit menopausal women experiencing these symptoms. However, these studies are generally small, lack controls, and do not directly address menopausal symptoms. No substantial research exists on Provence Rose’s phytoestrogen content or its effects on hormonal balance.
In summary, while Provence Rose is occasionally used in traditional medicine for symptoms that overlap with menopause, its use for menopause is based primarily on tradition rather than scientific validation, and the evidence is weak.
