Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Ophiopogon japonicus (commonly known as Mai Men Dong in Traditional Chinese Medicine, TCM) is primarily used in traditional herbal medicine rather than being supported by modern clinical science for menopause. In TCM, Ophiopogon is believed to "nourish yin," moisten dryness, and clear heat, which aligns with addressing symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, and dryness that are common during menopause. Historical TCM texts and formulas sometimes include Ophiopogon for women experiencing menopausal symptoms, often in conjunction with other herbs that support hormonal balance and hydration of bodily systems.

However, there is a lack of robust scientific studies directly examining Ophiopogon’s efficacy for menopausal symptoms in humans. Most modern research on Ophiopogon focuses on its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and cardioprotective properties, with little attention to hormone modulation or menopause-specific effects. While some animal studies suggest potential endocrine effects, these do not translate directly to clinical recommendations for menopause. Therefore, its use for menopause is justified mainly by tradition rather than scientific validation, and the supporting evidence is considered weak (rated as 1/5).
