Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Lindera aggregata (also known as Wu Yao) is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb primarily used for its effects on promoting the flow of Qi, alleviating pain, and treating urinary disorders. In the context of menopause, its use is largely based on traditional practices within Chinese medicine, where menopause is sometimes conceptualized as a disruption of Qi and Blood flow. There is historical precedent for using Lindera aggregata in formulae aimed at easing symptoms such as abdominal pain, urinary difficulty, or bloating, which may co-occur with menopause. However, there is no robust clinical or pharmacological research specifically demonstrating its efficacy for the core symptoms of menopause (such as hot flashes, night sweats, or hormonal changes). Most scientific studies on Lindera aggregata focus on its antispasmodic, analgesic, or urinary effects. Thus, while its use for menopausal symptoms is recognized in traditional contexts, scientific validation is lacking, and the quality of evidence supporting its application for menopause per se is very limited.
