Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Euryale seed, also known as fox nut or "Qian Shi" in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), has been used historically in East Asian herbal practices. In TCM, Euryale seed is classified as an herb that "tonifies the kidney and spleen" and is employed for conditions like frequent urination, diarrhea, and as a general tonic. Regarding menopause, its traditional use is indirect: menopause is considered a result of declining kidney essence in TCM, and herbs that strengthen the kidney—such as Euryale seed—are sometimes included in formulas aimed at alleviating menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, and fatigue. However, there is very limited direct scientific evidence supporting the effectiveness of Euryale seed for menopause. Research on Euryale seed has focused mainly on its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-diabetic properties. There are no high-quality clinical trials or rigorous studies demonstrating that Euryale seed, on its own, provides significant benefit for menopause-related symptoms. Thus, while its use for menopause is based on traditional theories and some inclusion in multi-herb formulas, scientific evidence for its specific efficacy in menopause is weak or absent.
