Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Elk antler, also known as velvet antler, has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and other East Asian medical systems. It is believed to have general tonic effects, including supporting vitality, improving blood circulation, and treating conditions associated with aging. In the context of menopause, traditional use centers on the idea that elk antler can help balance "yin" and "yang" energies, strengthen bones, and alleviate symptoms such as fatigue and weakness, which are sometimes associated with menopause in TCM frameworks. However, scientific evidence supporting elk antler for menopause-specific symptoms—such as hot flashes, night sweats, or hormonal regulation—is sparse to nonexistent. Most modern studies on velvet antler focus on its potential effects on joint health, immune function, or athletic performance, not menopause. There are no high-quality clinical trials demonstrating efficacy for menopause symptom relief. Therefore, the justification for using elk antler in menopause is rooted in tradition and not in modern clinical science.
