Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Chinese Silkvine (Periploca sepium) has a history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), primarily for conditions such as rheumatism, pain, and inflammation. Its application for menopause is not a central theme in classical TCM texts, but it is sometimes included in multi-herb formulas aimed at alleviating menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, and mood swings. The traditional rationale is based on the herb's purported ability to "nourish yin" and "dispel wind-dampness," which can be interpreted in TCM as addressing imbalances that may arise during menopause. However, scientific research directly investigating Chinese Silkvine for menopause is extremely limited. There is little to no clinical evidence supporting its efficacy or safety for menopausal symptoms. Some preclinical studies have identified anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects of Periploca sepium extracts, but these findings have not been translated into robust clinical trials for menopause. Thus, its use for menopause is primarily rooted in tradition rather than scientific validation, and the supporting evidence is weak (rated 1 out of 5).
