Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Alchemilla vulgaris, commonly known as lady's mantle, has a long-standing place in traditional European herbal medicine, where it has been used for a variety of women’s reproductive health issues, including menstrual irregularities and menopausal symptoms. The herb is traditionally believed to exert astringent and anti-inflammatory effects due to its high tannin content and presence of flavonoids. Folk practitioners have used infusions or extracts of Alchemilla to help with symptoms like hot flashes, night sweats, and general discomfort during menopause, often as part of broader herbal blends.

However, there is very limited scientific research specifically validating the efficacy of Alchemilla for menopause. A few in vitro and animal studies suggest some estrogenic or anti-inflammatory activity, but these findings have not been robustly demonstrated in human clinical trials for menopausal symptom relief. Most of the evidence for its use remains anecdotal and rooted in traditional practice rather than modern scientific validation. Thus, while Alchemilla continues to be included in some herbal formulations for menopause, its use is justified primarily by traditional rather than scientific evidence.
