Nicotine, the primary psychoactive component in tobacco, has been studied for its cognitive-enhancing effects, particularly on memory and brain function. Scientific evidence, primarily from controlled laboratory studies, suggests that nicotine can transiently improve certain aspects of attention, working memory, and information processing speed in both smokers and non-smokers. These effects are attributed to nicotine’s action as an agonist at nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) in the brain, which play a role in modulating neurotransmission involved in cognitive processes.
Some small-scale clinical trials and experimental studies have explored the use of nicotine (administered via patches, gum, or nasal spray) in populations with cognitive impairment, such as patients with Alzheimer’s disease, mild cognitive impairment, and schizophrenia. Results have shown modest improvements in some cognitive domains, though the effects are often short-lived, and the clinical significance remains uncertain. Importantly, these studies do not advocate the use of tobacco products due to their well-established health risks; instead, they focus on purified nicotine or analogues.
While there is emerging scientific evidence supporting nicotine’s cognitive effects, current data are insufficient to recommend nicotine as a therapeutic agent for memory or brain function outside of research settings. Long-term use is associated with addiction and other adverse effects, limiting its practical application. Overall, nicotine’s role in supporting memory and brain function is scientifically investigated but not yet validated for routine clinical use.
