Krill oil is primarily promoted for memory and brain function due to its content of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, especially eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Both EPA and DHA are well-known for their roles in brain health, with DHA being a key component of neuronal membranes. Several observational studies and a few small randomized controlled trials (RCTs) suggest that higher intake of omega-3s may be associated with slower cognitive decline and improved memory, particularly in aging populations.

However, most of the robust evidence for cognitive benefits comes from studies on fish oil or isolated omega-3s, not specifically krill oil. Krill oil does offer a potentially superior bioavailability of omega-3s due to its phospholipid structure, and it contains the antioxidant astaxanthin, which could provide additional neuroprotective benefits. A handful of small human studies have found that krill oil supplementation can increase blood levels of omega-3s comparably or even more efficiently than fish oil, but direct evidence showing significant improvements in memory or brain function is limited and not yet conclusive.

Overall, while the biological rationale for krill oil’s role in supporting brain health is solid, the direct clinical evidence for memory and cognitive benefits remains preliminary. Larger, high-quality trials are needed to confirm these effects. Thus, krill oil's use for brain function is scientifically plausible but not yet strongly validated.
