Evidence supporting the use of: Chinese salvia root
For the health condition: Memory and Brain Function
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Chinese salvia root (Salvia miltiorrhiza, also known as Danshen) has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), primarily for promoting blood circulation, resolving blood stasis, and supporting cardiovascular health. Its use for memory and brain function is primarily rooted in tradition. Classical TCM texts sometimes associate improved blood flow with better cognitive function, and Danshen is occasionally included in herbal formulas aimed at “calming the spirit” or “nourishing the mind.” However, these uses are generally secondary to its main indications for heart and vessel health.
Modern scientific studies on Danshen and cognitive function are limited and mostly preliminary. Some animal studies suggest that certain compounds in Danshen, such as tanshinones and salvianolic acids, have neuroprotective and antioxidant effects that could theoretically benefit brain health. A few small-scale studies have explored its potential to protect against neurodegenerative processes, but robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. There is not yet sufficient high-quality evidence to firmly establish its efficacy for memory improvement or the treatment of cognitive disorders.
In summary, the use of Chinese salvia root for memory and brain function is grounded in traditional practice and theory, with very limited preliminary scientific support. The evidence base is not strong or comprehensive enough to warrant confident recommendation for this indication outside of traditional or complementary contexts.
