Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Immunoglobulin G (IgG) has scientific support for use in the context of mastitis, particularly in veterinary medicine. Bovine mastitis, an infection of the mammary gland in dairy cows, is a significant issue in the dairy industry. Oral or intramammary administration of IgG-rich preparations, such as bovine colostrum or hyperimmune milk, has been explored as a way to enhance the local immune response and combat pathogens responsible for mastitis, such as Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Studies have demonstrated that supplemental IgG can bind pathogens and neutralize toxins, thereby reducing bacterial load and inflammation in the mammary gland. However, while some clinical trials and experimental models show benefit, the results are not universally consistent and the quality of evidence varies. In human medicine, the use of IgG to treat mastitis is rare and not standard practice, but colostrum (which is rich in IgG) is naturally protective against mastitis in the postpartum period. Overall, the use of IgG in treating mastitis is supported by moderate scientific evidence, especially in veterinary applications, but further high-quality randomized controlled trials are needed to establish efficacy and optimize dosing strategies.
