Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine for a variety of ailments, including skin infections and inflammation. Its essential oil is known for its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and wound-healing properties. In the context of mastitis—a painful inflammation of the breast tissue, often due to infection—geranium oil has been traditionally applied topically (diluted in a carrier oil) to help reduce swelling, pain, and bacterial growth. However, direct clinical evidence for its efficacy specifically in treating or supporting mastitis is limited. Most support for its use comes from traditional medicine systems and anecdotal reports, rather than robust scientific trials or studies in humans with mastitis. Some in vitro studies suggest geranium oil can inhibit the growth of certain bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus, which is commonly implicated in mastitis. Despite these promising findings, there is currently insufficient scientific validation specific to mastitis management. Therefore, while its use for mastitis is justified primarily by tradition, and there is some preliminary laboratory evidence of relevant properties, rigorous clinical research is lacking. Use of geranium oil for mastitis should not replace conventional medical treatment, and individuals should consult healthcare professionals before use.
