Rhaponticum (also known as Leuzea carthamoides or Maral root) has a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in Russia and Central Asia. The root was traditionally consumed by Siberian athletes and herders who believed it enhanced physical strength, endurance, and male virility. The key active compounds in Rhaponticum, notably ecdysteroids such as 20-hydroxyecdysone, have been studied for their anabolic and adaptogenic properties, which are thought to support general vitality and reproductive health. Historically, it has been considered a tonic for male sexual health, used to combat fatigue and improve libido.

While there is some preliminary animal and in vitro research suggesting that ecdysteroids may influence muscle growth and possibly testosterone production, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking.
