Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Rehmannia (Rehmannia glutinosa) is a prominent herb in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), where it is primarily used to "nourish Yin" and "tonify the kidney." In TCM theory, the kidney is closely linked to reproductive health in both men and women, including vitality, sexual function, and fertility. Classical formulas containing Rehmannia, such as Liu Wei Di Huang Wan, are prescribed for symptoms believed to result from "kidney yin deficiency," such as decreased libido or reproductive weakness. However, direct scientific studies on Rehmannia's effects on the male reproductive system are limited. Some research suggests possible antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, and animal studies have hinted at potential benefits for testicular function or hormone regulation, but robust clinical evidence in humans is lacking. The continued use of Rehmannia for male reproductive health is therefore rooted in tradition rather than substantiated scientific findings. While it remains a core component of many TCM formulas for male vitality, its efficacy for this purpose has not been conclusively validated in modern clinical trials.
