Rating (out of 5): 3

Pomegranate (Punica granatum) has been traditionally consumed for its health benefits, but in recent years, scientific studies have explored its role in supporting the male reproductive system, particularly in relation to fertility and erectile function. Pomegranate is rich in polyphenols and antioxidants, which can help reduce oxidative stress—a factor implicated in reduced sperm quality and erectile dysfunction. Several animal studies have shown that pomegranate juice or extract supplementation can improve sperm count, motility, and overall fertility in male rodents, likely due to its antioxidant properties. Some small-scale human studies and pilot trials have also found benefits: for example, a study published in Clinical Nutrition (2008) reported improved erectile function in men with mild to moderate erectile dysfunction after pomegranate juice consumption. Another study in the International Journal of Impotence Research (2007) showed trends toward improved erectile function, but results were not statistically significant. Evidence regarding improvements in sperm quality in humans is limited and not conclusive. Overall, while there is preliminary scientific evidence suggesting pomegranate may offer some support for male reproductive health, especially through its effects on oxidative stress, large-scale, high-quality clinical trials are lacking. Thus, the evidence base is moderate (rated 3/5), with more rigorous research needed for definitive conclusions.
