Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Dates (Phoenix dactylifera) have been traditionally consumed in many cultures for general health and vitality, but recent scientific research has explored their effects on the male reproductive system. Several animal studies have indicated that date fruit and date pollen may improve sperm quality, count, and motility, and may increase testosterone levels. For instance, a 2016 study published in Biomedicine & Pharmacotherapy found that date palm pollen extract improved sperm parameters and hormone profiles in infertile male rats. Another study in Andrologia (2014) demonstrated similar improvements in sperm quality in rats exposed to oxidative stress. The proposed mechanisms include antioxidant activity, hormonal modulation, and the presence of micronutrients such as zinc and flavonoids. However, human clinical data are limited; a few small studies suggest potential benefits, but robust, well-controlled trials are lacking. Most evidence comes from animal models, and extrapolation to humans should be made with caution. Therefore, while there is emerging scientific support—primarily from preclinical research—the overall evidence rating is moderate due to the lack of large-scale human studies.
