Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4
Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) has a long history of use in Ayurvedic medicine as a tonic for enhancing male vitality and reproductive health. Traditionally, it has been considered an aphrodisiac and used to improve libido, semen quality, and fertility in men. In recent years, several scientific studies have investigated these traditional claims.
Clinical trials have shown that ashwagandha supplementation may improve certain parameters of male reproductive health. For example, randomized controlled trials have demonstrated that ashwagandha root extract can increase sperm concentration, semen volume, and motility in infertile men. A 2010 study published in Fertility and Sterility found that infertile men who took ashwagandha root powder experienced significant improvements in semen quality and antioxidant status compared to placebo. Another double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in 2013 reported increased testosterone levels and greater sperm counts in men taking ashwagandha extract.
The proposed mechanisms include reduction of oxidative stress and regulation of reproductive hormones. While not all studies are of high methodological quality and more large-scale research is needed, the existing evidence points to real, measurable benefits of ashwagandha for male reproductive health beyond traditional use.
