Evidence supporting the use of: Mesua
For the health condition: Malaria
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Mesua (commonly referred to as Mesua ferrea or "Nagakesar") has a history of use in traditional medicinal systems such as Ayurveda and traditional Southeast Asian medicine. It has been used for a variety of ailments, including fever and inflammatory conditions. There are reports and ethnobotanical surveys noting its use for treating malaria-like symptoms or fevers believed to be caused by malaria. However, its use is largely based on traditional knowledge rather than extensive modern scientific validation.
Some studies have screened Mesua ferrea extracts for antiplasmodial activity (activity against Plasmodium species, the causative agents of malaria) and have found mild to moderate in vitro activity in certain extracts (e.g., leaf or flower extracts). However, these studies are preliminary, and there is insufficient clinical evidence or large-scale pharmacological validation to confirm effectiveness or safety in treating malaria in humans. The traditional use is better documented than scientific efficacy, hence the moderate evidence rating. In summary, Mesua has a documented traditional role in supporting treatment of malaria and related fevers, but more research is needed to scientifically validate its antimalarial properties.
