Evidence supporting the use of: Flueggea suffruticosa
For the health condition: Malaria
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Flueggea suffruticosa (also known as Securinega suffruticosa) has been traditionally used in some regions of Asia as a medicinal plant for a variety of ailments, including malaria. Ethnobotanical surveys and traditional Chinese medicine documents have recorded the use of this plant in decoctions or other preparations for treating fevers and malaria-like symptoms. However, the direct scientific validation for its anti-malarial efficacy remains limited. Some preliminary in vitro studies have found that extracts of Flueggea suffruticosa may have general antimicrobial or anti-inflammatory effects, but robust clinical or laboratory evidence specifically demonstrating anti-plasmodial (anti-malaria parasite) activity is lacking. No well-designed human clinical trials or extensive pharmacological studies have confirmed its effectiveness against malaria. Thus, while its use is rooted in traditional medicine practices, the strength of evidence supporting its efficacy for malaria is weak and primarily anecdotal. Further research would be needed to evaluate its potential as an anti-malarial agent.
