Hedyotis, particularly Hedyotis diffusa (also known as Oldenlandia diffusa or "Bai Hua She She Cao" in Traditional Chinese Medicine), has a long history of use in traditional herbal systems, especially in China. It is commonly included in herbal formulas intended to "clear heat," "detoxify," and support the body's elimination processes, which practitioners sometimes associate with lymphatic health. In practice, it is used for conditions characterized by swelling, abscesses, or nodules, which are interpreted in TCM as related to lymphatic congestion or toxicity. However, the traditional texts do not explicitly reference the Western concept of the lymphatic system, but rather use broader terms related to bodily fluids and detoxification. Scientific evidence directly supporting Hedyotis for lymphatic system support is limited. Some pharmacological studies have explored its anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and anti-tumor properties, which could be tangentially related to lymphatic function, as the lymphatic system is involved in immune responses and inflammation. Still, these studies are preliminary, often in vitro or in animal models, and do not specifically demonstrate direct effects on lymphatic drainage, lymph node health, or lymphatic vessel function in humans. As such, while traditional use exists, robust clinical evidence is lacking, and the association with lymphatic health is primarily based on traditional practice rather than validated biomedical research.
