Evidence supporting the use of: Sarsaparilla
For the health condition: Lymph Nodes or Glands (swollen)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Sarsaparilla (Smilax spp.) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Central and South America, as well as in traditional Western herbalism. It has been used historically as a "blood purifier" and for a variety of conditions believed to be associated with toxins or impurities in the body, such as skin conditions, joint pain, and general inflammation. The belief that sarsaparilla can support or "cleanse" the lymphatic system—including lymph nodes or glands—stems from these broader traditional uses and the idea that supporting the blood and lymph can help resolve swellings and promote detoxification.
However, there is very limited scientific evidence specifically supporting the effectiveness of sarsaparilla for treating swollen lymph nodes or supporting lymphatic health. Most research on sarsaparilla focuses on its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties, and much of this evidence is from in vitro or animal studies rather than robust human clinical trials. There are no well-controlled studies demonstrating that sarsaparilla directly benefits the lymphatic system or reduces lymph node swelling in humans. Thus, while traditional herbalists may recommend sarsaparilla for general detoxification and indirectly for swollen glands, this use is not substantiated by scientific research. The evidence supporting its use for lymphatic support is therefore rated very low.
