Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Phellodendron bark (from Phellodendron amurense, also known as Amur cork tree) is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb commonly used in formulas to "clear heat" and "dry dampness." Its use for supporting or treating swollen lymph nodes or glands is rooted in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) concepts, where such swellings are often attributed to "heat-toxin" or "damp-heat" accumulations. Phellodendron bark, known as "Huang Bai" in TCM, is included in formulas aimed at reducing inflammation, toxicity, and swelling, which can include swollen glands or lymph nodes associated with infections or abscesses.

However, scientific evidence directly supporting Phellodendron bark for the treatment of lymphatic or glandular swelling is minimal. Research exists regarding its anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and immunomodulatory effects, mostly in vitro or in animal models, but not specifically or robustly for swollen lymph nodes in humans. Thus, while its traditional use for "swelling" and inflammation is documented, clinical trials substantiating efficacy for this precise condition are lacking. Therefore, its use for swollen lymph nodes is justified primarily by tradition rather than scientific validation.
