Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Oldenlandia, specifically Oldenlandia diffusa (also known as Hedyotis diffusa), has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for a variety of conditions, including those involving swelling and infections such as swollen lymph nodes or glands. In TCM, Oldenlandia is often considered to "clear heat" and "resolve toxicity," and it is commonly prescribed in herbal formulas targeting abscesses, boils, and lymphadenitis (swelling of lymph nodes). The traditional rationale is based on its supposed ability to dissipate masses and reduce inflammation. From a scientific perspective, there is emerging, but still limited, evidence that compounds within Oldenlandia (such as iridoid glycosides and flavonoids) may have anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and possibly anti-tumor properties. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest potential for modulating immune response and inhibiting inflammation, which could theoretically benefit swollen lymph nodes if the cause is infection or inflammation. However, robust clinical trials in humans specifically addressing lymph node swelling are lacking. Most of the scientific literature focuses on its possible anticancer activity rather than direct effects on swollen glands. In summary, the use of Oldenlandia for swollen lymph nodes is primarily supported by traditional use, with some preliminary scientific rationale but insufficient clinical evidence, thus justifying a moderate evidence rating.
