Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Ganoderma lucidum (commonly known as reishi mushroom or lingzhi) has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine. It is believed to support the immune system and “clear heat” or “reduce toxins,” which, in traditional frameworks, are often associated with swollen lymph nodes or glands. Traditional practitioners have used Ganoderma in formulas for conditions involving immune response, such as infections or inflammation, where lymph node swelling might be present. However, most of this use is based on broad immune-modulating and anti-inflammatory properties attributed to the mushroom, rather than direct clinical research on lymphadenopathy specifically.

Modern scientific research does show that Ganoderma contains polysaccharides and triterpenes with immune-modulating and anti-inflammatory effects, and some studies suggest it may enhance the activity of certain immune cells. However, there are no high-quality clinical trials directly evaluating Ganoderma for the treatment or reduction of swollen lymph nodes in humans. Thus, the use of Ganoderma for lymph gland support is primarily rooted in traditional use, with only indirect scientific support based on its general effects on immunity and inflammation. The evidence rating is 2/5 because there is historical precedent and plausible biological rationale, but a lack of direct clinical validation.
