Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Fritillary, particularly species such as Fritillaria cirrhosa and Fritillaria thunbergii, has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for the treatment of various respiratory and glandular conditions. In TCM, Fritillary bulbs (known as "Bei Mu") are believed to "clear heat" and "transform phlegm," making them popular remedies for symptoms like cough, sore throat, and in some cases, swelling of the lymph nodes or glands, especially those associated with respiratory infections or inflammatory responses. The rationale in TCM is that swollen lymph nodes are often interpreted as "phlegm-fire" or heat-toxin accumulations, for which Fritillary is thought to be beneficial. However, while this traditional use is well-documented, there is limited modern scientific evidence to directly support the efficacy of Fritillary in reducing lymph node or gland swelling specifically. Most pharmacological studies on Fritillary focus on its expectorant, antitussive, and anti-inflammatory properties, with some in vitro and animal studies suggesting potential anti-inflammatory effects. Nonetheless, clinical trials in humans for the treatment of swollen lymph nodes or glands are lacking. The use for this condition remains primarily supported by traditional practice rather than robust scientific validation.
