Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Fang-Feng (Saposhnikovia divaricata) is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb commonly used in formulas for its purported ability to "expel wind" and alleviate symptoms associated with exterior syndromes, such as fever, chills, and body aches. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), swollen lymph nodes or glands are often interpreted as manifestations of "wind-heat" or "toxin" accumulations. Fang-Feng is included in classic formulas (such as Yin Qiao San and Chai Ge Jie Ji Tang) used for early-stage febrile diseases where lymphadenopathy (swollen nodes) may occur as part of the clinical picture. Historical TCM texts describe Fang-Feng’s utility in dispersing pathogenic factors and reducing swellings, though the language does not correspond directly to modern biomedical concepts of lymph nodes.
From a scientific perspective, there is limited direct evidence to support Fang-Feng specifically for swollen lymph nodes or lymphadenitis. Some preclinical studies suggest anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects of Fang-Feng extracts, but clinical trials targeting lymphatic conditions are lacking. Therefore, its use for swollen glands is primarily based on traditional patterns of symptom management rather than robust scientific validation.
