Embelia, particularly Embelia ribes (commonly known as Vidanga), has a long history of use in traditional Ayurvedic and other South Asian medicine systems. It has been employed for a variety of purposes, most notably as an anthelmintic (to expel parasitic worms). In traditional contexts, Embelia is sometimes used for its purported anti-inflammatory and detoxifying properties, which leads to its application in cases of swollen lymph nodes or glands. However, these uses are primarily based on historical texts and ethnobotanical reports rather than rigorous scientific evaluation.
There is a paucity of modern scientific research specifically investigating Embelia’s effects on lymphatic system disorders, lymphadenopathy, or swollen glands.
