Evidence supporting the use of: Cinquefoil
For the health condition: Lymph Nodes or Glands (swollen)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Cinquefoil (Potentilla species) has been used in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in European folk practices, for a variety of ailments including sore throats, mouth inflammations, and occasionally, swollen glands or lymph nodes. The traditional rationale stems from its astringent properties due to the presence of tannins, which are believed to reduce inflammation and swelling in mucous membranes and tissues. Preparations such as teas, gargles, or topical poultices were sometimes applied to address swelling or discomfort in the throat and neck region, which would include lymph nodes or glands. However, there is very limited documentation that specifically ties cinquefoil to the treatment of lymphatic swelling; most references are vague and lump it with remedies for general oral and throat complaints.
There is no substantial scientific evidence to support the efficacy of cinquefoil for swollen lymph nodes or glandular issues. No clinical trials or pharmacological studies have directly investigated its effects on lymphatic tissue or its ability to reduce lymphadenopathy. Modern herbal references rarely mention cinquefoil for this purpose, and it is not recognized in evidence-based phytotherapy for lymphatic conditions. Consequently, while there is a historical precedent for its use in this context, it is weak and not validated by modern research.
