Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Cicada, specifically the slough or molted exoskeleton of the cicada insect (known as Chan Tui in Traditional Chinese Medicine), has a long history of use in East Asian herbal medicine. Traditionally, Chan Tui is used to "dispel wind-heat," soothe sore throats, relieve spasms, and treat skin eruptions. It is sometimes included in formulas for swollen glands or lymph nodes, especially when these symptoms are associated with febrile illnesses, sore throat, or measles. The rationale in traditional contexts is that cicada slough is believed to help "release the exterior" and clear heat, thus addressing the underlying cause of swelling as understood in TCM theory.

However, there is little to no scientific research supporting the effectiveness of cicada slough for swollen lymph nodes or glands. Most evidence for its use derives from centuries of clinical observation and traditional practice rather than modern pharmacological studies. Systematic reviews and scientific literature do not document controlled trials or pharmacodynamic studies confirming its efficacy for lymphatic swelling. Therefore, while the use of cicada for swollen glands is rooted in tradition, the evidence base is very limited from a scientific perspective.
