Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Centipeda minima, commonly known as "smallweed" or "Eclipta," has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Chinese herbal medicine. Traditionally, this herb has been employed to treat a variety of ailments, including respiratory conditions (such as rhinitis and sinusitis), skin diseases, and swelling associated with infections or inflammation. In the context of lymph nodes or glands (i.e., swollen lymph nodes), Centipeda minima is listed in some traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) pharmacopeias as an ingredient to "disperse swelling" and "reduce nodules." The rationale for its traditional use often centers on its purported anti-inflammatory and detoxifying properties, which are believed to help the body resolve swellings, including those of lymphatic origin.
However, direct scientific evidence supporting its efficacy specifically for treating swollen lymph nodes is limited. Some pharmacological studies have identified anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory compounds in Centipeda minima, such as sesquiterpene lactones and flavonoids, which may theoretically contribute to reducing inflammation or swelling. Yet, these findings are preliminary and generally do not focus on lymphatic conditions. Clinical trials or robust in vivo studies targeting lymph node swelling are lacking. Therefore, while the herb is traditionally used for this purpose, its application is not strongly validated by modern scientific research, and the evidence level is modest at best.
