Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Castor oil has a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in Ayurvedic and folk practices, where it is believed to support lymphatic health and reduce swelling of lymph nodes or glands. The most common traditional application is the use of "castor oil packs"—cloths soaked in castor oil and applied to the skin over swollen lymph nodes, often with heat. Proponents claim this method improves lymphatic circulation, reduces inflammation, and facilitates detoxification. However, these beliefs are based primarily on anecdotal evidence and historical practice rather than rigorous scientific studies.

From a scientific standpoint, there is very limited evidence supporting castor oil’s effectiveness for swollen lymph nodes. Some small studies and laboratory experiments suggest that ricinoleic acid, the main component of castor oil, may have anti-inflammatory properties. However, these studies do not directly investigate castor oil’s effect on lymphatic swelling or lymph node health in humans. Major clinical trials and systematic reviews are lacking. Therefore, while castor oil is traditionally used for this purpose, there is little scientific validation for its efficacy in treating swollen lymph nodes or glands.
