Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Bupleurum, particularly the species Bupleurum chinense and Bupleurum falcatum, has a longstanding history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In TCM, Bupleurum (Chai Hu) is often included in formulas intended to "harmonize" the body and to address conditions described as "shaoyang disorders," which may involve symptoms such as fevers, chills, and a sensation of fullness in the chest and flanks. It is also historically used to "soothe the liver" and promote the flow of qi. Swollen lymph nodes or glands, while not described in biomedical terms in TCM, are sometimes interpreted as manifestations of "phlegm" or "heat toxin" that Bupleurum-containing formulas aim to address. However, the evidence for Bupleurum specifically targeting lymph nodes or swollen glands is based on traditional patterns and interpretations, not on direct clinical or laboratory evidence. While there are some laboratory studies exploring Bupleurum's anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects, there is no robust clinical trial evidence specifically supporting its use for swollen lymph nodes or lymphatic conditions. Therefore, the use of Bupleurum for this purpose is primarily justified by tradition, with limited scientific validation. The traditional evidence is moderate but does not correspond directly to the biomedical understanding of lymphatic swelling.
