Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Benzoin siam, a resin obtained from the Styrax tonkinensis tree, has been used historically in traditional medicine systems, primarily in Southeast Asia. Its applications include use as an ingredient in balms, tinctures, and incense, often for respiratory issues, skin problems, and as an antiseptic. There are some records in traditional herbal medicine of benzoin preparations being applied topically to inflamed skin or as part of poultices, occasionally in the context of “glandular swellings” or lymphatic congestion, although such uses are not prominent or well-documented compared to its other uses. The rationale in traditional practice seems to be its perceived ability to “draw out” infection or reduce swelling, possibly due to its mild antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. However, there is a lack of detailed or systematic documentation in historical materia medica specifically recommending Benzoin siam for lymph node or glandular swelling. Modern scientific evidence supporting its effectiveness for these purposes is absent, and it is not recognized in current clinical practice as a treatment for swollen lymph nodes. Therefore, any use for lymphatic or glandular conditions is based on sparse traditional precedent rather than robust historical or scientific backing.
