Evidence supporting the use of: Baliospermum
For the health condition: Lymph Nodes or Glands (swollen)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Baliospermum montanum is a plant widely used in traditional Ayurvedic and folk medicine systems in India and neighboring regions. Its roots and other parts have been used for a variety of ailments, including as a purgative, for skin diseases, and for swelling and glandular enlargements. Specifically, in the context of swollen lymph nodes or glands (often referred to as “glandular swellings” in traditional texts), Baliospermum is sometimes cited as an ingredient in polyherbal formulations aimed at reducing such swellings.
However, the scientific evidence supporting its use for lymphadenopathy or swollen glands is very limited. Most of the claims are rooted in traditional practice and are described in classical Ayurvedic texts, such as the Bhavaprakasha and Charaka Samhita, where the plant is classified as having properties to reduce swelling (“Shothahara”). There are a few preclinical studies showing anti-inflammatory activity of Baliospermum extracts, which could theoretically support its use for swollen tissues, but these are not specific to lymph nodes and have not been validated in human clinical trials.
In summary, the use of Baliospermum for swollen lymph nodes or glands is primarily justified by traditional use, with very limited scientific evidence. The evidence rating is therefore low, reflecting the lack of robust clinical validation.
