Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Aralia is a genus of plants used in traditional medicine, particularly in systems such as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and North American Indigenous practices. Historically, certain species like Aralia racemosa (American spikenard) and Aralia elata have been used as remedies for various ailments, including those related to the lymphatic system and swollen glands. The traditional rationale is that Aralia species act as "alteratives," substances believed to purify the blood or support the removal of toxins, which was thought to be beneficial for lymphatic congestion or glandular swelling. However, there is little to no robust clinical or pharmacological evidence to support these uses. Modern scientific literature does not provide clinical trials or mechanistic studies validating Aralia's effectiveness for lymph node or glandular swelling. Existing studies focus mostly on anti-inflammatory or immunomodulatory properties in vitro or in animal models, and these do not specifically investigate effects on swollen lymph nodes or glands in humans. Therefore, the use of Aralia for this purpose is justified by tradition rather than scientific validation, and the evidence supporting its effectiveness is very limited.
