Citrus reticulata, commonly known as tangerine or mandarin orange, is widely used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) under the name Chen Pi (dried tangerine peel) to support the Lung system, particularly for regulating qi, resolving phlegm, and relieving cough. The traditional rationale is that Chen Pi has a warming and aromatic quality, which is thought to help move stagnant qi in the chest and lungs and to dry dampness, thereby alleviating symptoms like cough and phlegm associated with respiratory ailments.

Modern scientific studies on Citrus reticulata’s effects on the lungs are limited, but some phytochemical analyses reveal that its peel contains flavonoids, essential oils, and other compounds with potential anti-inflammatory and expectorant properties. A few in vitro and animal studies suggest possible benefits in reducing airway inflammation or modulating mucus production; however, these results are preliminary and not robustly validated in human clinical settings specifically for lung support. Thus, while traditional use is significant and long-standing, direct scientific evidence supporting its efficacy for lung health remains limited.
